We keep it simple. Really simple.
Kids at this age do not completely understand the difference between a friend,a doll, or even a pet. They can think many things are alive, loving and comforting.
It’s a great time to teach the simplicity of thinking of Jesus as a friend and active participant in their daily activities.
We give them time to “get it.”
Little kids take longer to understand, and sometimes they want to see things twice. This is because they are processing what they’ve learned and want to fully absorb what’s going on.
They may need to see a scenario for a little bit longer than big kids for it to sink in, but it will! Depending on the ages of your class, we encourage showing our puppet lessons twice.
We help them empathize by creating scenarios they have been through.
Toddlers & preschoolers might not know how it feels to wait by the pool of Bethesda for 39 years, but they know how it feels to be sad, lonely, afraid, and relieved.
They are very good at picking up on the feelings of others, and this can be used in teaching them empathy.
We let them see Jesus do the behavior.
Kids are looking for examples of what to do. So if you want them to get an idea, have a grown-up demonstrate it.
Having Jesus demonstrate is even better because it demonstrates his love in a way they can understand. This is an easy way to help them incorporate Jesus into their lives, even when they are very little.
We move around a lot.
Requiring some small children to sit in the same position for even ten minutes can be tough. Just moving them from one part of the room to another can drain enough energy and create a whole new focus.
We keep each activity brief.
Our activities follow the principle that a child can listen attentively for the number of minutes equal to his years. Therefore, two-year-olds can concentrate on the same activity for two minutes, four-year-olds for four minutes. Our stories can be read in less than three minutes. Our puppet-play lessons are the same amount of time.
While each activity is designed to be brief, we provide enough material within each of the six lessons to fill a 45-60 minute class.
