Biblical Journal Prompts for Teens and Tweens

Discover 52 Journal Prompts Designed to Build Christian Faith
in Teens & 'Tweens!

Journaling is a wonderful way to help teens better understand themselves & their relationship with God.

It can be therapeutic.

It can be eye-opening.

And most importantly- it can be a FUN!

But Here’s the Secret to
Effective Journaling: PROMPTS.

A blank page can be intimidating for adults, and downright scary to a kid (even a big kid).

Rather than a "dear diary" type journal where teens are asked to write about anything, the right prompt ignites a teens’ imagination.

Instead of teens & pre-teens groaning about how they “don’t know what to write about”, they are excited to get their ideas on paper right away.

Today, I’m thrilled to share with you 52 journal prompts specifically designed for teens & tweens. Our prompts are designed with two goals in mind:

1) To help the teen understand more about themselves.
2) To deepen a teen’s relationship with God.

Here's a Look Inside:

Biblical Journal Prompts for Teens

Our package contains 52 printable journal prompts so that you have one available for each week of the year.

Our prompts are diverse and appeal to all types of teens. Some prompts ask kids to put themselves in a Bible character’s shoes. Others ask them to think of their own lives in new and interesting ways.

All encourage Christian thinking and a deeper relationship with God. The ultimate design in each prompt is to keep interest and be fun.

Along with each prompt, there is one Bible lookup that can be used at home or church to discuss how the verse applies to the prompt.

Generally, teens spend between 10-15 minutes on each journal entry.

Our prompts cater to teens & tweens ages 11-18, but can easily be used with a wider age group.

How to Use our Journal Prompts

We have touched on all the subjects that are essential and useful to Christian teens.

Use our Table of Contents to find journal prompts that work best for your needs (organized by topic and Bible verse).

With this age group, the choice is yours if the journals are private or something that is shared with others (just make sure you clearly communiate if it's private or public before the teens get started).

One technique that has worked particularly well in our church is "warming up" the teens with a private journal entry where they are asked to respond to the prompt for 5 minutes without lifting up their pen. This is often referred to as "stream of consciousness" writing.

The journal entries themselves remain private, but then the teens are asked to share their ideas in a group setting. The process of "warming up" their brain with writing brings on a very natural and open discussion. (If you're getting blank stares and a general lack of participation amongst your teens, try this technique!)

Here are Just Some of the Ways We Use These Journal Prompts at Our Church:

Early Bird Activities.

Keep teens busy (and out of trouble) while the rest of their class/youth group trickles in.

Late Pick Up Activities.

Let teens continue their learning & fun while they wait for their rides.

5-15 Minute Time Fillers.

Sometimes a lesson doesn’t take quite as long as we thought it would, these can help fill in the gap.

Journal Portfolio

Keep each teen's weekly journal entry in a folder to present at the end of the year as a "Journal Portfolio" (a wonderful keepsake collection!).

Bulletin Board Displays

Display the teens's journals on a church bulletin board outside your Sunday School or Youth Group classroom.

Homework.

Send students home with a fun journal prompt that echoes the days lesson (a great discussion starter for parents!)

Homeschool Writing Assignments

Share as a turn-key writing assignment for your homeschooling families.

Mid Week Recharge

Use the prompts on Wednesday nights if your church has a mid-week teens program.

Social Media Posts

Use the journal prompts to spark discussion on Facebook, twitter, and other forms of social media that teens and 'tweens LOVE.

Travel Projects

Are you heading out on a long trip by air, train, or car? Print out journal prompts to keep your big kids busy (& thinking) during your travels.

Flu Folder.

Every classroom has a “flu folder” loaded with these journal prompts that we can whip out if a teacher (or student) suddenly falls ill.

Imagination is Necessary for Faith

Some great teachers say that imagination is a necessary component for strong faith.

The basis of Christian journal writing and drawing is using imagination to bring us into a closer walk with Christ.

These prompts will do what no other teaching tool will do for the young: They allow a teen’s imagination to be a major component in the learning process.

We are not “teaching” all the input and expecting a kid to simply respond to it with output.

We are allowing teen's perception and understanding to feed off itself and grow as they complete more prompts.

Use the prompts as would suit you and your church families - and watch teens expand their hearts, souls and minds!
